Dr. Saumitra Shah after completing his graduation at P.S Medical college, Karamsad finished his Masters in Otorhinolaryngology in March 2007. He then went for further training to Chennai at Madras ENT Research foundation under the guidance of Padmashree Dr. Mohan Kameswaran. Here he received extensive training in cochlear implant surgery, microsurgery of the ear and endoscopic sinus surgery. He then visited the famous House Ear Institute in Los Angeles, USA where he did fellowship in Ear surgery.

During his Post Graduate studies, he presented his research papers at Gujarat State Conference in Diu (2005) and Daman (2006) , where he won the best paper award on both the occasions. He has attended various courses and workshops all over the country on endoscopic sinus surgery and temporal bone dissection.

Dr. Saumitra Shah is the first to start cochlear implant program in South Gujarat under the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Mohan Kameswaran. The first implant was performed in April 2008. Since then, he has successfully performed more than 800 cochlear implant surgeries on patients with varying age, the youngest child being 8 months old which is the youngest case in India.

He has done fellowship at the Bionic Ear Institute and royal College of Surgeons, Melbourne, Australia which is considered to be a renowned centre for cochlear implant surgery all over the world. He recently also visited Liden Medical centre for advanced training in Cohlear implant surgery.

He was awarded Dr. R.A.F Cooper award for his research paper – “ Clinical audit of functional outcome measures after cochlear implantation: A South Gujarat experience”

in Jan 2011 , which is given by the Association of otolaryngologist of India for achieving excellence in the field of ENT by surgeons of less than 10 years experience .

He is also awarded the foreign travel fellowship by Indian society of Otologists to well-known Cause Clinic in Paris for 3 months fellowship

He was invited by the Cochlea Ltd , Australia for The Visiting Implant Specialists to Australia (VISTA) program as faculty for research and development in the field of cochlear implants.

His special interests include cochlear implant surgery, ear surgeries and endoscopic sinus surgery.
